Post Operative Instructions
for Rectal Surgery
Take stool softeners twice daily until completely healed. Colace is an over the counter stool softener that works well.
Take pain medication as needed, but remember that narcotic pain medication causes constipation. Use Milk of Magnesia if needed for constipation.
A small amount of bleeding after rectal surgery is normal, however if you have a significant amount of bleeding, please call our office.
Soak your bottom in a tub or warm water three to four times a day. Pat dry. Do not over cleanse the area.
Call the office, 428-6300, after your surgery to make a one week follow-up appointment.
You may experience some drainage from the wound area, apply a dressing as needed.
Call our office if you develop
any signs of infection; redness, pus-like drainage, or fever
greater than 101.
